Co-Extrusion Lamination Machine for Food Flexible Packaging Applications
In flexible packaging applications, extrusion lamination is the process of attaching a thin film material to a substrate. co-extrusion lamination machine for food flexible The process is used to improve the properties of a film or paper substrate by creating an air barrier, oxygen inhibitor, water vapor retarder or UV protectant layer. It can also be used to add a color or print. The film layers are combined at a lamination nip, which is a pair of rolls that are pressed together under controlled temperature and pressure. The nip is often equipped with stack and chill rolls. The cooling roll provides the required cooling and the surface finish of the nip is determined by the use of specialty surface finish rolls such as matte, hair cell or sand matte.
The earliest examples of extrusion lamination were developed in the 1940s for milk cartons and other multiwall bags where improved wet strength and barriers to insects were desired.co-extrusion lamination machine for food flexible In the 1950s, an extruded polyethylene coating replaced the traditional wax dipped paperboard substrate in gable-top cartons. In addition to providing a moisture barrier and insect protection, the coating improved the stiffness of the cartons, which allowed them to withstand repeated opening and closing.
Coextrusion is a variation of the conventional monolayer extrusion process in which two or more different plastic materials are simultaneously fed through one or more extruder dies to produce an interlocked co-layer of films. This is a highly efficient manufacturing process which produces films of varying combinations and characteristics including anti-microbial, barrier, heat seal, printing and other functional properties.
UFlex, India’s largest multinational flexible packaging materials and solution company has recently launched an Extrusion Coating Machine EL-1300 in response to the sustained demand from the Indian Convertor fraternity. The machine is being showcased at PLASTINDIA 2018.
This new machine has been re-engineered to incorporate co-extrusion and tandem extrusion variants in order to address the various requirements of flexible food packaging application. The machine offers the flexibility of working with LDPE, PP, EVA, acid copolymers and polymer blends. It also has the capability to work with both cold and hot melt adhesives. The machine is designed to run at 350 M/min line speed for high-performance production of flexible packaging film. It has AC servo drives for accurate and stable line speed control.
