Coating is done by feeding the substrate through an extruder where a layer of hot resin is applied to the substrate. The resin can be a polyethylene, ethylvinyl acetate, or a combination of both. The process can apply up to 5 layers of lamination depending on the requirements of the product. Generally, this is a cost-effective method of achieving superior protection for the printed substrates from moisture and other contaminants.
The underlying carrier web 12 of the material substrate may have insufficient strength to withstand the forces typically exerted upon it by extrusion-coating systems. It is often a case where the strength or ability of the web to undergo extrusion-coating depends primarily on its weight on some per unit basis (e.g., lbs/ream or lbs/ 3000ft 2 ).
In these circumstances, it is advantageous to provide a lightweight web with sufficient strength properties that can be conveyed along and positioned on top of the heavier carrier web 12 without being substantially stretched by the tension imposed on it by the conveyance system, thereby permitting the two webs 12, 20 to pass through an extrusion station 34 without the formation of wrinkles as they do so. The lightweight web 12 may be provided with a degree of independent tensioning by, for example, the addition of a crimping device 60 to one or more of its edges.
A striper extruder is frequently utilized in pipe applications to allow the application of a single color or material to only one side of the finished pipe, thus avoiding the use of expensive barrier resin on both sides of the pipe. This type of coextrusion is also sometimes employed in profile extrusion to produce multilayer pipes with different materials on each side of the pipe.
