During the extrusion coating process, the resins are mixed with a solvent or other additives to create a lubricating mix. This lubricant reduces the friction between the film and the substrate, allowing for smooth extrusion. The lubricants also prevent the formation of gummy deposits on the extruder die.
The molten resin is forced through the extruder die onto the substrate using an oscillating T-die system. The T-die system utilizes a flat production roll surface and no gauge band to achieve high speeds with low energy consumption, as well as precise die gap control. The oscillating T-die system also ensures even melt distribution and a consistent film thickness across the entire width of the film, regardless of substrate or line speed.
To make the process more efficient, our equipment uses a multimanifold die design that allows two different resins to be applied at one time, or co-extruded together in a single step. This eliminates the need for a separate extrusion process to apply the secondary coat. The resulting multi-layer film provides more functionality and is ideal for a variety of end use applications.
Extrusion coating machines can operate at higher speeds than other laminating technologies. This is because the nip between the pressure and chill rolls is much narrower than in traditional lamination processes, so there is less heat loss and faster film draw. The higher line speeds also allow for better adhesion between the coated and uncoated substrates and a more uniform film thickness.
The mechanical characteristics of an extrusion coating line depend on the type of plastics being run, but all lines have a common set of components. These include an extruder, a die, a chrome plated chill roll, and winders/unwinders. For extrusion coating, special attention is required to the shear and tensile stresses that are placed on the film because these can change its shape. Pseudoplastic resins are more resistant to shape change, which makes them ideal for this application.
